CLAYTON, Mo. – St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Wesley Bell made a potentially game-changing political announcement on Monday, dropping his bid to unseat incumbent Missouri Republican Josh Hawley for his U.S. Senate seat.Democrat U.S. Senate candidate Lucas Kunce has emerged as a heavy favorite in the August primary over Bell, with a decisive fundraising edge.Instead, Bell declared his intention to run for the U.S. House seat of a fellow Democrat, Congresswoman Cori Bush of St. Louis. It’s been nearly five months since Bell announced his Senate campaign. As he campaigned around the state, he said fellow Democrats made it clear that although he wanted to run for the Senate, they needed him to run against the progressive Bush.“Even when I would be in places like Kansas City, I would hear those calls,” he said.A growing number of Democrats take issue with Bush’s progressive stances.”Bush notably voted against President Joe Biden’s infrastructure bill in 2021, which is expected to b...Nuggets hold off pesky Jazz, 110-102, to open season 4-0

If a championship hangover is in the offing for the Nuggets, it hasn’t shown up yet. While their 110-102 victory over Utah Monday night wasn’t always pretty, the Nuggets took care of business when it counted and have opened the season 4-0 for the sixth time in franchise history and the first time since 2018.Through the first four games, Denver has trailed for just four minutes, 33 seconds, of play. The Nuggets trailed for only 16 seconds Monday night, 3-2, in the opening minute of the game. The Nuggets, playing back-to-back games after blowing out the Thunder in Oklahoma City on Sunday, seemed on the verge of blowing out Utah a number of times but never put together a sustained run, in part because their free-throw shooting (7 for 17) was so bad.Nonetheless, Denver’s defense had the Jazz out of tune most of the game, holding them to 42.9% shooting and blocking eight shots.Nikola Jokic and Aaron Gordon, both playing in their 600th career game, led the way for Denver, ...Independence Pass closed for season following significant early snowfall

PHOENIX (AP) — Christian Walker ran through a stop sign and right into a costly out in the Arizona Diamondbacks’ 3-1 loss to the Texas Rangers in Game 3 of the World Series. Missing a late signal from third base coach Tony Perezchica, Walker was thrown out at the plate by a perfect throw from right fielder Adolis García in the second inning Monday night. Walker — 3 for 31 since the start of the NL Championship Series entering Game 3 — was encouraged by a standing ovation when he came to bat and answered with Arizona’s first hit off Texas starter Max Scherzer. His double off the base of the wall in right-center had Arizona primed to snap a scoreless tie, especially when Tommy Phan followed with a single to right.Perezchica intially waved for Walker to turn for home. Walker put his head down to touch third base and didn’t see Perezchica change the signal to stop as he rounded the bag. García got to the ball quickly and made a one-hop throw to catcher Jonah Heim, beat...Teravainen scores late as Hurricanes beat Flyers 3-2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Teuvo Teravainen scored the tiebreaking goal with 3:47 left to play and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 on Monday night. Stefan Noesen and Michael Bunting also scored for the Hurricanes, who have won eight straight matchups. Frederik Andersen stopped 26 shots.“Freddie played awesome and kept us in the game,” said Teravainen, who scored his eighth goal of the season. “We took a few too many penalties, but the penalty kill did a really good job and kept us in the game.”Owen Tippett and Garnet Hathaway had goals for the Flyers, losers of four of their last five. Carter Hart had 31 saves. “I think we had 12 scoring chances and they had a few, too,” Flyers head coach John Tortorella said. “Sitting behind the bench and not capitalizing on those chances against a good hockey team — we just have to bury one of those. It just comes back to bite us.”The Hurricanes were able to build momentum off their penalty kill, forcing the Flyers to go 0 for 5 ...New Georgetown basketball coach Ed Cooley has plans to change the culture and the win-loss record

WASHINGTON (AP) — At 2:29 p.m. on a recent weekday afternoon, Ed Cooley blew his whistle to start a Georgetown men’s basketball practice at the John R. Thompson Jr. Intercollegiate Athletic Center, then yelled, “Let’s go!” at players wearing navy T-shirts with “Hoya Family” written on the back.Soon, with everyone gathered around him, Cooley — the new coach, hired away from Big East rival Providence — was talking to his team — a mostly new group filled with transfers — about “emotional physicality and physical physicality,” about how they were going to work on their first drill “until we get it right.”For nearly 2 1/2 hours, Cooley alternately observed — arms crossed, rumpled piece of white paper in one hand — and offered stern guidance sprinkled with colorful language and wit (“We’re not trying to run a play; we’re trying to score!”). He criticized (“If he ever scored on me, I’d punch myself! Sometimes it’s not about your defense; it’s about your pride!”). He taught (“The best leade...Why your favorite urban legend is more than just a story

“The world is tough and life is tough, and it’s fun to imagine other things.”That’s what a University of Maryland professor said about the importance of imagination. It’s something to remember as you let your imagination run wild this spooky season, while sharing stories around fire pits and campfires or getting into the Halloween spirit with a scary movie marathon.“Imagination is very, very important and these stories feed our imagination and feed our need for imaginative stories,” said Mike Olmert, a professor of literature in the English department. But some stories have a lot more meaning than just a simple jump scare.Around the D.C. area, the Goatman is a popular urban legend to tell. West Virginia has the Mothman. New Jersey has the Jersey Devil running around the swamps. In other places, it might be vampires or werewolves.“The Goat Man theory goes back to the Middle Ages.
