Ahead of tip-off between the Nets and Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday, Cavs head coach J.B. Bickerstaff and Nets coach Jacque Vaughn celebrated the late, great, Willis Reed, who tragically passed away at age 80 earlier in the day.Neither head coach had a personal relationship with Reed — a two-time NBA champion dubbed one of the “50 Greatest Players in NBA History” after spending his entire playing career with the Knicks before assuming both head coach and general manager positions with the then-New Jersey Nets.“I didn’t have a relationship, but there’s a respect that I had for him,” said Bickerstaff, whose father Bernie became an assistant coach for the Capital Bullets the during Reed’s final season before retirement. “There was a relationship obviously with my father being one of his peers and there’s an admiration for all the things that he did in this league, not just as a player but as an ambassador for the league.̶...Luis Severino rebounds with sharp slider, recommends pitch clock tweaks

TAMPA — It looked as if Luis Severino’s rocky camp would continue Tuesday after the pitcher surrendered a leadoff homer to Detroit’s Kerry Carpenter, but the Yankees right-hander recovered for his best start of the spring.“I need to stop giving up homers,” said Severino, who allowed one more first-inning run to the Tigers before settling in. Detroit didn’t score off him after that, and Severino struck out nine over four innings while allowing four hits and one walk on 74 pitches in a 6-3 Yankees win.Severino’s slider looked the best it has all exhibition season. He threw the pitch 42% of the time and used it to induce five whiffs. His fastball, used at a 39% clip, added six more.“I thought it was really sharp, really good,” Aaron Boone said of the slider, adding that he saw that late disappearing bite that Sevy’s known for.“Life was there with the heater. A lot of swing and miss. Good day.”Another reason for Sev...Stash’s Pizza owner held without bail after allegations of abusing undocumented employees

Stavros Papantoniadis, owner of Stash’s Pizza, will be held without bail after allegedly abusing undocumented employees in what prosecutors called a 15-year scheme, a federal judge ruled Tuesday night.“The body of work alone shows he’s a continued danger to his victims as well as the public at large,” argued Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian Fogerty at a four hour bail hearing at Boston’s Federal Court on Monday. “The evidence, in the government’s opinion, overwhelmingly shows he should be detained.”Papantoniadis, 47, was arrested last Thursday and is facing a single count of forced labor, but prosecutors dredged a well of alleged misconduct and disturbing behavior in their case to have the restaurateur held without bail at Monday’s hearing — possibly forecasting more charges to come. The forced labor charge stems from an investigation into claims from seven victims, all of whom lacked legal documentation to reside and work in t...Milwaukee shooting kills teenage boy, injures 5 women

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — A new report launched Tuesday on the eve of the first major U.N. conference on water in over 45 years says 26% of the world’s population doesn’t have access to safe drinking water and 46% lack access to basic sanitation. The U.N. World Water Development Report 2023 painted a stark picture of the huge gap that needs to be filled to meet U.N. goals to ensure all people have access to clean water and sanitation by 2030.Richard Connor, editor-in-chief of the report, told a news conference that the estimated cost of meeting the goals is somewhere between $600 billion and $1 trillion a year. But equally important, Connor said, is forging partnerships with investors, financiers, governments and climate change communities to ensure that money is invested in ways to sustain the environment and provide potable water to the 2 billion people who don’t have it and sanitation to the 3.6 million in need.According to the report, water use has been increasing globally by roughly...Arkansas governor signs school bathroom bill into law

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Tuesday signed a law prohibiting transgender people at public schools from using the restroom that matches their gender identity, the first of several states expected to enact such bans this year amid a flood of bills nationwide targeting the trans community. The bill signed by the Republican governor makes Arkansas the fourth state to place such restrictions at public schools, and it comes as bills in Idaho and Iowa also wait the governor’s signature. And it might be followed by an even stricter Arkansas bill criminalizing trans adults using public restrooms that match their gender identity.Arkansas’ law, which won’t take effect until later this summer, applies to multi-person restrooms and locker rooms at public schools and charter schools serving prekindergarten through 12th grade.
